WRITER’S DIGEST RECOGNIZES AUTHOR’S BOOK

The Writer’s Digest in Cincinnati , Ohio has recognized Enid Haney Barber for her
participation in the 15th Annual International Self-Published Book Awards.  Mrs. Barber
is the author of Cotton Fields.

This competition receives self-published books from all over the United States and awards one grand
prize and nine category prizes.

Upon review of Cotton Fields,  the judge awarded the book a “5” on Structure and Organization and a
“5” on Grammar as well as for the cover design.  The cover design was all the work of Pam Baird,
Editor.  Pam is a retired librarian from Waverly Central, and has edited several books and newspapers
since her retirement.

He further states he  was astonished by the amazing memory and the details about the struggles of
life and also the joys of childhood.  He states many of the sections about first loves and complicated
marriages reminded him of his own mother and grandmother.  His grandmother had missed out on her
first love and his mother, he said he was sure had settled to some degree although the love is there
now too.  “He treated me more like a child than a wife” is one of the phrases that most stuck out to
him.  He thought it was particularly interesting how parallel the stories of generations are.  Both
husbands had trouble with alcohol and the women seemed very strong and committed.  He thought
the historical details were also very important to be preserved.

Although the book did not win an award, the reviewers were extremely pleased at the quality of the
winning books, and indeed, at the level of self-publishing quality evidenced by a great many of the
entrants.
